Classical for ‘curious minds’: Guest Column in Classical Music Magazine

Thank you to Classical Music magazine for inviting me to write a guest column in their Spring 2024 edition. In it, I wrote about the lessons learnt as Creative Director of #ConcertLab with Southbank Sinfonia. From a starting point of feeling that classical music’s bold marketing adjectives weren’t translating across to the live audience experience, we embraced greater creative experimentation and risk-taking - finding inspiration from other art forms that seem to have embedded this in their practice:

“Take Shakespeare: a bastion of our national identity whose plays are transformed with each new production - while still sharing the same core text. There’s often a fearlessness in theatre-makers’ stagings, approaches to storytelling and appetites to dream up whole worlds in which an audience can lose itself. Such productions are a sum of many parts, built upon words - but extending far beyond them. What’s stopping us from doing the same with music?”
